Youth in Nature
The Youth in Nature Project (YiN) is a partnership between the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Probe Ltd and Child Dynamix and enables young people, aged 11 - 24 years, through youth engagement and partnership work with schools and youth groups from the Hull area to engage with wildlife and the environment; helping them to inspire others and enable conservation within their communities, as well as supporting them in gaining new skills in order to increase their employability options.
The Youth in Nature group used the University of Hull as their base and worked with local arts and film-making company My Pockets to create a film about tackling the use of single-use plastic. The film was aimed at primary school children and aimed to educate them about the effects that single-use plastic is having on our environments and also how to re-use, recycle, reduce and re-purpose single use plastics.

International Pupil Council
We worked with a group of 30 young people representing 15 different primary schools from across the city of Hull. We used creative participatory methods to co-design a set of research questions and activities to carry out as part of a citizen inquiry mission using the Nquire digital research platform at our local shopping centre. The young people then analysed the data to produce a coherent snapshot of the perception of single use plastics and approach to recycling in Hull.
This information was presented to the Lord Mayor of Hull at Hull Guildhall and the findings complied into a report.

From Hull to Bremerhaven...The project includes a comparator case study with young people in Bremerhaven, Germany, a city of comparable size and challenges to Hull, in order to initiate a wider understanding of the issues involved in engaging young people across different settings.
We worked with the Youth Climate Council in Bremerhaven who told us about the work they do to raise awareness of and tackle single use plastic use in Germany. They also work closely with the Bremen council to influence their decision making about environmental issues. |
Venn Boulevard Sullivan Centre is an alternative provision for secondary pupils who are unable to access mainstream education.
They work in partnership with mainstream schools and local authorities to provide a varied individualised educational offer, tailored to the needs of each young person.
The young people at the Sullivan Centre have been working on lots of different projects including designing jigsaws for primary school children, an ebook and a digital game which pitches aliens against plastic guzzling monsters!
Hedon Rangers are part of the Girlguiding movement - the UK's largest girl-led advocacy network. We are working with them as part of their Action for Change programme, through which, girls and young women gain the skills to change the things they really care about. Whether that's tackling inequality, keeping their local village hall open or leading campaigns to make transport more accessible or in this case, tackling the single use plastics issue.
Two talented Digital Media and Design students from the University of Hull are working with the Rangers to develop an app/digital gaming platform to educate primary school children about single-use plastics and supporting them to become Plastic Citizens, and to take the steps to make a difference to their communities and beyond.
